Ever wondered what would happen if Mr. Baldvinsson stepped down from flying and we had to adjust? Well, you’d get Professor Amelia Adara! She was a lot of former things I don’t remember and I’m not inclined to do real detective journalism work to find out but rest assured, she’s done a lot of stuff before she came to Hogwarts to take up the position of both Flying/Quidditch Instructor and school Healer. I never had to stop by the hospital wing for anything major but I’ll assume she did an alright job there. I did go to flying lessons though—one of the only classes you don’t really have to skip so I can speak a little on those.
One class had several brooms laid out across the pitch for all to see. There were a couple different kinds like: Oakshaft, Cleansweep, Blasting Star, Shooting Star and Jollyrocket brooms. There were a couple others too. Some dating back from before even your grandparents can remember but I didn’t take the time to get all the names down. Do you care? Getting to ride them was the most important part of the lesson, even if the students had to endure a question or two beforehand. After handing in the assignment—which wasn’t as bad as homework could get admittedly, needing only write your favourite broom—the students were asked to name another sort of broom that they like or a feature of the broom. I could spend a whole paragraph talking about mine but it’ll just be edited out so I won’t bother. Some of the ones that got named were laying on the floor, others probably weren’t, like the Blast Star fourth year Ravenclaw Hanna Newton mentioned….or the Yajirushi model Hufflepuff prefect Daisy Swann brought up. Pretty sure the Professor didn’t have THAT laying around.
When we FINALLY got to the activity, it was test driving brooms. Could’ve been fun if they weren’t all charmed to fly no higher than four feet in the air. Who in Merlin’s soggy beard flies a broom only four feet into the air? Circe, could you imagine quidditch matches that low. Reckon we’d have a bunch of dead players. THAT sounds like a safety hazard—and a complete lack of faith on the professor’s part. Didn’t trust us to fall off the brooms and not die. Shame that. I’m particularly good at not dying. Also could’ve been cooler if we didn’t have to be stopping to take notes along the way. School work, amiright? Things got a bit more interesting with the addition of bludgers and cotton balls that needed charming into house colours…so long as you ignored all the other stuff about still needing to vet your broom and take note of things. Focusing solely on the activity was the real way to go here. Not everyone went full force when the bludgers were introduced, what with some deciding to take it slow or whatever but you know what’d have been GREAT? Beater’s bats. Then we could’ve almost had a quidditch game going. Ravenclaw won the activity and earned an extra half hour of flying but with us still having another class to head to, it’d have been interesting to see if any of them actually took up the offer and skipped the next class. Doubtful. Waste of a reward on the wrong house if you ask me.
Nothing really notable in the setup of another lesson. Students grabbed their gear and headed out to the pitch after a class or two and the right amount of breakfast in their bellies to make them too sleepy for any real flying. Don’t think that’d exempt you from actual participation however. No. That was apparently not a good enough excuse. Go figure. Everyone got to stretching while the first question of the lesson was handed out. This time it was about quidditch techniques or manoeuvres. Everything from the Hawkshead Attacking Formation to the Wronski Feint, Bludger Backshots, Radial Runespoor, Blitzen Ballet, the Sloth Grip Roll, Starfish and Stick, Porskoff Play, Dopplebeater defense—the point is, there’s a ton of them and nobody’s really got the time. Practice time, students mounted their brooms and got to practising at least two of the tactics. You’d think there’d be injuries from overzealous but under skilled attempts but the first injury of the morning actually came from the Head Boy attempting to eat his own broom. Strange, I know, but take that at face value. Dude was actually there gnawing on wood until he got himself splinters. Not that unusual by this point in the term but something to remember all the same. That bit of unpleasantness over, the students had to team up to execute the techniques as they got the balls across the pitch. As if the Professor thought that by this point we’d actually still be listening enough to answer questions, she wanted students coming up with their own manoeuvres and info on how it’d work. Good one, Professor.

Captains
I had the extreme pleasure of getting to sit down with Hufflepuff’s lovely Bel Macindoe. Not only is she cheerful and all about the team she knew just what to do to lead the way to victory and bring home the Quidditch Cup for her team. Bel is friendly for sure but once out on that pitch she is all about the game and her efforts have always paid off. If one thing is clear for sure, it’s that she gave her heart and soul to the team.
How does it feel being Quidditch Captain for the third year in a row? Do you think that makes it any easier running a team?
It doesn't feel like something I should take for granted. Both times I have been asked to return as captain have felt special, it's not really a responsibility I take lightly, y'know? I dunno if it makes it easier but I do feel more confident picking my players - even if people doubt my decisions, I don't. I'm proud of every single person on my team and will defend them if anyone has anything to say about their place with us- first years included!
What is the best part about playing seeker?
The best and the worst bits are the same actually, it’s a constant challenge and a ton of pressure. You're never bored and you can't take your mind off of the task for even a second. At the end of the day it doesn't matter how good you fly, or how clever you are about timing the catch so that your team has enough goals to win; you either catch the snitch or you don't. Success is pretty black and white as a seeker: you always know exactly where you stand.
Being a seeker is not easy. How do you keep focused for so long?
I'm not sure I can give any useful advice, mate. I'm actually kind of a natural when it comes to focus and perseverance in sports. It’s sort of my thing because I genuinely love it. My heart is in it, and that means the focus part is easy.
Do you do anything fun to get the team pumped up before each match?
Well we deffo spend a lot of time together, and I try to make it clear that the most important bit is having fun. I also try have a bit of a chat with everybody one-on-one before the match and remind them exactly why I chose them, and all the good stuff they bring to the table, but also what to work on so that they have goals for personal development in their game. I reckon that's important so that win or lose, you can feel yourself improving and growing and learning, and that makes you a winner in your own self. The reserves are part of that too. They actually have a harder job honestly, because they've got to jump in at a moments notice if something goes wrong, and be able to slot in naturally and not throw off the team's balance.
What is your least favorite position to play? Why?
I dunno really. It’s natural to have a preference for what you're good at, but I don't hate any position because you can learn something from it that you can apply to your own pozzy, ya know? That's why I get everyone to do drills in all areas in our training sessions. Your game will always be better if you keep pushing yourself like that.
Everyone knows Quidditch is a rough sport. Have you ever been hurt out there on the pitch? Hopefully not!
A few bumps and bruises but nothing serious - I've got the world's best beaters protecting me out there! Derfael and Aaron!
Where do you see yourself ten years from now? Still playing Quidditch?
No, definitely not. Sorry if that disappoints ya, but my first loves are motocross and surfing - I see myself as a professional athlete, but a muggle one!
What is your favorite way to wind down after a Quidditch match?
Just spending time with the team and decompressing together. Win or lose that cements the team bond. We were lucky enough to win all our matches this year and set a few records along the cast and it was a blast to celebrate that together, but we had losses last year so we've been through a lot as a team and have seen both sides of the after match experience. Deffo sharing that is the best way through it, you can't let yourself feel alone or you'll only focus on the negative, y'know?
Quite a few students were affected by the furry pink mutants this term and had pink fur growing all over them. Do you think this affected how those on the Quidditch teams played the game?
No. I think if anyone says otherwise it's a copout. We had players affected and the scores speak for themselves. Our wins are because we played hard as a team. Same goes for the other teams - I don't think anyone should discount their hard work and effort by blaming it on the fur situation, nobody is going to learn or grow by using that as an excuse.
What are you looking forward to most next term since it is your final year?
I'm not actually coming back to school. This was my final year. Surprise! I'm an official dropout. Because I am not really academic, Headmaster Trent agreed it was in my best interest for my athletic goals to leave at the end of this term. I'm lucky to be leaving on a high note with Quidditch and getting to play with an amazing team at my side. Thanks Hogwarts! Bel Macindoe out!

I had the pleasure of sitting down with Patrick, Slytherin’s Quidditch Captain again for another round of questions. It’s Patrick’s second year as Slytherin Quidditch Captain and we’ve had great games so far, but no quidditch cup. Read on to see what he has to say about his team, fluffy mutants and the ghost of Dopple past.
You just finished year two of being the quidditch captain. How did you feel this year compared to last? Was it easier or harder?
This year was a little bit harder. We were a slightly younger team than we were last season. It was tough for me to find our groove like we did my first year with practices and such. Honestly it’s on me for the losses.
Did you come up with any new tactics or ideas for the team this year?
Honestly, I tried to. It was hard to find the right tactics that worked against the other teams.
What do you look for in a player during tryouts?
Dedication. A player who will keep themselves glued to the sport even after something gets in their way to success makes a truly remarkable player. That trait will make Hogwarts players into professionals one day.
Thankfully, this term wasn’t run by a crazy old dictator. What do you think of our new Headmaster? Do you miss Hawthorne at all?
Man was I glad to see the dictator go. I felt trapped by him. I felt bad that Hawthorne was back but never really saw her much aside from when she taught Runes. So can’t say much on her. Now Headmaster Trent. He’s a pretty cool guy. I feel bad that you know those furry pink things and all the missing items happened his first term, but he took it like a champ each time I had to come tell him something else was missing.
What did you think about those furry pink things... before they started eating everything?
They looked super cute. They also looked friendly. I accidently held one… thankfully I didn’t hold it early in the term so I didn’t go full on floof or anything.
On a scale of 1 to 10, how shocked were you when Charms class wasn’t cancelled and that Professor Dopple’s ghost kept teaching like nothing had changed?
Oh man, I was totally shocked. I hate to say it, her ghost status made the room easier to tolerate since it wasn’t a million degrees. I hated seeing someone sweet like her having that happen. Total shock.
If you were a fluffy pink mutant, what would you eat first?
Fluffy pink mutant…. Well considering how hungry they were I’d say Great Hall table. That would hold me off, right?
Let’s talk about next term. Got any new secret tactics to help us win the Cup?
Now, now, you know if I tell you that then my secret weapon wouldn’t be so secret anymore.
If you could recruit any Professor to join your quidditch team, who would it be?
Surprisingly, Nobel. He was pretty intense on that broom during the joint Potions/Flying lesson we had once. Like he had some speed about him. I bet he was pretty legit back in the day.
Last but not least, which quidditch accessory do you most relate to? Bludger? Snitch? Hoop? Goggles? Shin-protectors?
Snitch…. But only because I like to watch things until I have a clear picture than be seen. Not 'cause I like to snitch.

Lions can't fly according to common wisdom, but they certainly did soar this past term. Those soaring cubs were led by Gryffindor Fifth year Anna Meriwether, who agreed to join us today and to be an open book. At least about Quidditchy things.
Congratulations on being asked back for your second term as Quidditch Captain! How did it feel to get the owl?
It felt great! I really enjoy being Captain, it’s a lot of fun!
Tell me a little about how your team performed this term, in your words.
Well, to be honest, half of them know how I felt about them, because they were all suspended for the first month of the season. That wasn’t too great for our performance, but… well. It is what it is, I suppose. I think our chasing team did wonderfully well, though. Did you see our scores?? Honestly, it was amazing!
And how was the competition?
They were pretty good, to be fair. Well done, Hufflepuff and Slytherin for beating us.
Tell me how you got interested in Quidditch in the first place.
The thing is that I started broom racing before I really played Quidditch. The summer after I got my broom and completed my first races, I decided to try out for Quidditch and got in the team! No turning back now, though I still compete in broom races too.
Any suggestions for young players who want to make the team?
Just do your best and, honestly, being a reserve is not bad at all! It might be just the first step. And if you really want to make it into the team, just keep trying. You never know.
What should they do if they want to play professionally some day?
That’s a good question and one I’ve had to consider myself. Um, I suppose just get involved in as many Quidditch things as possible? Obviously, not in different teams, but I mean, tryout for the house team, maybe a national or regional team outside of school too. That's what I’ve done and hopefully it’ll work out!
What do you think the team will be like next term? Any predictions?
I’m really curious myself, actually, because a few of them are graduating, so it should be interesting. But changes are always welcome, you know. I really believe you have to try new approaches if you want different results.
How are you going to balance everything with NEWTs next term? I’m seriously very concerned for you.
I’m not taking NEWTs next term, I just took OWLs! Please, let me at least have a year off! I have to say, I’m glad I won’t have to listen to my brother nag me about studying so much this year.
What advice do you have for future generations?
Merlin, such deep questions. Uh… I suppose, just do what you love and… life will be good! It’ll be especially good if you win the House Cup, I think, but I’m still yet to find out about that.
Will you miss me next term? Pretend you will.
Yeah, sure. I’ll miss your little gifts.

It's no surprise that Juniper Primeaux and I were never the best of friends. As beaters on opposing teams, the competition was always fierce as can be. But as we wrap up our final year playing Hogwarts Quidditch, I've gained some mad respect for the Ravenclaw Captain. It's pretty impressive that she can still find time for running a team, while studying so hard for NEWTs. Heck, she even had time to sit down for an interview!
What do you look for when putting together a team?
Someone who shows that they are determined, hardworking, and a team player. I know just how nerve-wracking tryouts can be. As long as you showED up and really look like you were giving it your everything then it was good. Of course, talent also plays into it as well. You have to show talent, too; it is a sport after all.
You left some pretty big shoes to fill, Juni. Any advice for the poor person who’ll be taking over the team after you?
I had some really big shoes to fill myself after Captain Kirk. My advice would be first, don’t stress it’s not worth it and you will worry and be no good for anyone. The second thing I would say is remember what you have learnt and pass that on to your team. Knowledge is a powerful thing in this game. As weird as that sounds. Listen to your coaches, your captains, and even older (and wiser) teammates.
Do you have any pregame rituals?
A run around the lake and quiet time reading a book.
Do you have any rivalries that extend off the field?
No, I wouldn’t say that I have any off field rivalries, a lot of my friends play quidditch so I like to leave it on the pitch. That’s not saying that I’m not competitive off the pitch.
Which House is your favorite to play against? Least favorite?
If I answer this then one house gets left out. I like being able to play against all of the other houses, there are good and bad points of having to play all of them.
How would you sum up your overall experience on the quidditch team these past few years?
It was absolutely one of the best parts of my seven years at Hogwarts, something that I will never forget, and I will always carry those memories and learning experiences with me. Although, as of right now I don’t have any plans of going pro. I might try out for the Wizarding University team but it was a big part of my Hogwarts career.
Aside from inevitably marrying Slate, having five kids, and honeymooning on some exotic island, do you have any immediate future plans for life post-Hogwarts?
Well yes, other than that I’m heading to the Wizarding University in Madrid for Anthropology & Archaelogy and pre-healer studies.
What’s one thing you never leave your Common Room without?
My bag with an extension Charm. It had everything I needed in it from books to snacks to makeup. I even put my extra broom inside one time just because I didn’t have room in my trunk for it. It’s a really handy bag that is small enough to fit in my hand.
Is there anything you wish you did, but didn’t have the chance to do before graduation?
Pull a prank. There was no idea I could ever pull off a prank that would be one of the most epic pranks in school history. I would have liked to at least have had a chance to try to pull one off.
That's because someone, I won't say any names (ME) already pulled off the most epic pranks in school history. If I had known, I would've let you join. Anyway, if you were to give yourself a personalized yearbook superlative, what would it be?
It would definitely be most likely to become a Jedi. No, no I’m kidding. No really that’s it. For real though, the superlative I’d give myself would be Most likely to have attempted a prank gone wrong (hints why I didn’t do it).
